Port Isabel Public Library Brief History

The Port Isabel Public Library was established in 1973 in a meeting room of the City Hall by the Laguna Madre Business and Professional Women’s Club. Since the very beginning, the library has enjoyed strong community support. In 1975, a dedicated library was built (about 2,500 square feet) and was stocked with volumes donated by local patrons.

By 1990 the library went through its first expansion and thanks to the efforts of the Friends of the Library 2,500 more square feet were added. In 1995 we had the opportunity to request funds from Lower Rio Grande Valley Empowerment Zone. $400,000 was granted to expand, automate and remodel the facility. Grants from Texas State Library, Tocker Foundation, Economic Development Corporation support, and a donation of the land from City of Port Isabel, made it possible to undergo a substantial remodeling, expansion and automation doubling the size of the library.

Volumes

Today, thanks to the dedication of the library patrons, a very active group of Friends of the Library organization and a tremendous volunteer force, the library has over 36,000 volumes.

Library Accreditation

The Port Isabel Public Library was first accredited by the state in 1975.
